Abstract:
|
The Energy Information Administration (EIA) currently publishes a wealth of data on America's energy situation. While EIA's data collections focus mainly on fossil fuels, demand for data on new energy sources is increasing. Fielding new federal surveys, however, is costly and time consuming. In a dynamic energy environment, the long-term value of any proposed new data collection may be difficult to predict. We examine three potential strategies for meeting data needs in a changing energy environment: (a) monitoring administrative and industry data; (b) combining existing data in new ways to extract new information; and (c) gathering new data by supplementing existing federal surveys. We discuss each approach and provide illustrative examples.
