Abstract:

I use RExcel with Rcmdr as the primary software tool in introductory courses. I use the RExcel interface to R as a supplementary tool in advanced courses. Our worksheets, using Excel for problem specification and R for graphics, illustrate the concepts of hypothesis testing, construction and interpretation of confidence intervals, and least squares fitting. We use Excel scrollbars, checkboxes, and change of data values for dynamic control of R graphical displays. Any R function or graph can by controlled from an Excel worksheet. The Rcmdr package provides a clickable menu into R. RExcel places the Rcmdr menu on the Excel menu bar. By placing any R function inside the spreadsheet paradigm of automatic recalculation, we have placed the full power of R, one of the best programs for statistical analysis and graphical display of data, into a familiar user environment.
