Abstract:

When academia and industry meet, paradigms clash. This also concerns statistical computing. To many academic statisticians, spreadsheets like Excel are impure, numerically unsafe generators of non-reproducible research. To people in industry, they are convenient and powerful tools for day-to-day data keeping and analysis. This talk starts with a reminder of what any practicing statistician should know about the spreadsheet paradigm (automatic recalculation, tabulation of expressions, cross tabulation, optimization, and integrated interface design). As explained in the other talks of the session, this can be extended via RExcel to the use of R thereby creating 'the most powerful spreadsheet in the world.' This talk then focuses on how to exploit this on a routine basis in large industrial settings and in common consultancy.
