Abstract:
|
The role of statistics in business and industry has both advanced and changed dramatically as a consequence of such factors as the democratization of statistics, the computer revolution, the contributions of Deming, Six Sigma and globalization. We briefly review this evolution and the important place that statistics occupies in business and industry today. We then comment on the role and challenges for today's industrial statisticians. We use an example dealing with the development of a system for automated monitoring for impeding locomotive field failures to illustrate our points. The discussion is based on our recently published book on The Role of Statistics in Business and Industry.
