Abstract:

The damage inflicted by security breaches in computer and communication networks is measured by multiples of billions of dollars. The analysis of such malicious activities as to when to act at the right moment to assure cost efficiency and maximum security are of a paramount interest to computer scientists and risk analysts. This research topic opens new avenues in a very critical area of Cyber-Security defined to be "Stopping Rules in Security Testing." Computer scientists have estimated growth of failures by simply looking at the linear portion of the growth curve. This method may produce unreliable results that can dramatically change depending on the portion specified as linear. In this research, we introduce more reliable methods using estimates from the entire growth curve and compare these estimates to ones obtained using MESAT (one-step-ahead stopping rule algorithm).
