Abstract:

The Pick a better snackTM & ACT program provides school-based education about the benefits of nutrition and physical activity. Multilevel models using data collected from multiple school sites in Iowa are estimated to predict self-reported student physical activity, nutrition knowledge, preference/exposure, self-efficacy, and fruit and vegetable consumption. Using 2007-2008 data, we examine the level-2 effects of differences in projects, teachers, urbanicity, program intensity, and socioeconomic status (measured by the percentage of students eligible for free- and reduced-price lunch) and the level-1 effects of student differences based on grade level and demographics. Implications for public nutrition policy are discussed.
