Abstract:

In Italy during the past decade there has been a slow increase of the competitiveness of the industrial system. The main reason of this situation is the low level of firms' productivity and profitability, the activities specialization and the organisational structure of the enterprises. The aim of this paper is to analyse the competitiveness of different groups of enterprises identified with indicators of their performance, like for example the profitability, the productivity and the openness to the international markets. The clusters are identified using a classification algorithm, applied firstly to the entire data set and secondly to some specific economic sectors. The analyses are carried out using recent and original data supplied by Italian National Statistical Institute.
