Abstract:
|
Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes represent significant threats to life and property in many parts of the world. The potential for future changes in their distribution makes it important to understand their current distribution. Differences in space and time in procedures for collecting and archiving reports of events lead to problems in using such reports in a straightforward manner. As a result, relationships between environmental conditions and events have been developed so that differences in the frequency of those environmental conditions can be used as proxies for the events themselves. Problems at each step of the process will be discussed, as well as estimates of the current distribution and possible changes in the future.
