Abstract:

R is one of the most powerful and advanced statistics programs currently available. Excel is the most prevalent software used for data entry, storage, and presentation. RExcel provides an interface between the two systems. RExcel places the entirety of R inside the Excel automatic recalculation model. RExcel also integrates the R Commander menu system onto the Excel menu bar. This puts complete access to the full power of R at the mouse-click level. Data can be transferred from Excel to R (and back). The clickable RExcel menu supplements the powerful R command language. Results from the analyses in R can be returned to the spreadsheet. We discuss our experience teaching introductory courses in statistics with the power of R and the ease of Excel. We discuss some of the technical challenges associated with the development and applications of this software combination.
