Abstract:

A paradox is presented wherein the unconditioned probability of an event is greater than the conditional probability of the event for each of the mutually exclusive and exhaustive conditions under which it can occur. The paradox is introduced using batting averages and then presented in the real-world context in which it was first known to be observed. No data can exhibit both this paradox and the distinctly different phenomenon known as Simpson's paradox.
