Abstract:
|
Under-reporting is a key issue when dealing with nutrition surveys. This paper estimates under-reporting of energy in the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS), identifies characteristics of under-reporters and assesses the impact of under-reporting on data analysis. Total energy expenditure based on equations from the Institute of Medicine is compared to energy intake. Confidence intervals inspired by the Goldberg cutoffs are used to identify under-reporters. In CCHS, under-reporting is estimated at 9.6%. Age, sex, being overweight or obese and physical activity are associated with under-reporting. Identifying under-reporters results in a positive association between energy intake and being obese.
