Abstract:

Baseball managers often make decisions about which players to use in a game based on the results of previous matchups with a given pitcher. These previous results are typically based on small samples. A hierarchical beta-binomial model is used to assess the variability in batter performance across the population of pitchers and to assess the variability of pitcher performance across the population of batters.
