Abstract:

The Audit Trail is a Blaise programming option available for computer-assisted interviews. It provides a detailed picture of each interview by recording the sequence of screens visited and entries made by the interviewer, each with a time stamp. This information allows for a better understanding of the collection process. In this paper, we will present a description of the Audit Trail files and steps needed to convert the raw text files into a coherent usable SAS dataset. We will present details on how Audit Trail provides a window into the collection process (e.g., time spent on each question and module, edit trigger rates and interviewer's reactions, flow problems, and special events---help, change language, remarks). Finally, we will provide examples of what we have learned from the Audit Trail data for Cycle 6 of the Canadian National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth.
