General Information

Continuing Education offerings consist of Continuing Education (CE) courses and Computer Technology Workshops (CTW). The courses cover a range of topics including topics that may have been missed in graduate school, such as survival analysis or sampling, or those that are considerably more current, such as data mining and computational aspects of Bayesian data analysis. Courses are offered in two-day, one-day, and half-day formats on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Computer Technology Workshops are offered in two-hour intervals on Wednesday. An hour and a half break beginning at 12:30 p.m. is provided for attendees to have lunch on their own. The ASA will provide only beverages for midmorning and midafternoon CE course breaks.

The Advisory Committee on Continuing Education (ACCE) oversees the CE program. The ACCE creates the CE program based on the selections from the submitted offerings. Sections and/or Chapters of the ASA are encouraged to submit and co-sponsor proposals. Sections and Chapters are encouraged to be pro-active and decide what courses would be of value to their membership.

Monitors

The CE Program seeks monitors for its educational presentations. Monitors will be allowed to audit one course of equal length for every course he/she monitors.

Monitors are expected to:

If you are interested in participating, provide your name, current and summer mailing addresses, email and phone number to Rick Peterson, Education Programs Administrator. Send your information either by email to rick@amstat.org or by fax to 703-684-3768. Monitor positions are limited and will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

Monitors will be sent notification of acceptance. They will also be asked to select the presentation to audit and which day they would like to monitor a course. (*Note: the course being monitored must be a different course from the one being audited).

Textbooks
Some instructors recommend optional textbooks to enhance the educational experience for the CE course attendees. Textbooks for CE courses are no longer available for purchase from ASA. If a course attendee wishes to obtain the textbook, they must order it on their own directly from the publisher or other vendor. Textbook information is provided with the course descriptions on the following pages.

Registration deadline for courses and Computer Technology Workshops is 11:59 p.m., Eastern Daylight Time, July 20, 2006. Registration will depend on seat availability and be handled on a first-come, first-served basis. Registering early is the best option to ensure a place for any CE offering. If seats are available after the July 20 deadline, on site registration will be offered in Seattle. To participate in courses and Computer Technology Workshops you must register for the Joint Statistical Meetings.

Cancellation Policy
Courses and workshops; Cancellations received by 11:59 p.m. EDT, June 29, 2006, will receive an 80% refund. Cancellations received June 30 - July 20 will receive a 60% refund. Requests for cancellation received after July 20 will not be refunded. The ASA reserves the right to amend the syllabi and/or cancel courses and workshops. Should a cancellation occur, tuition will be refunded or applied to another course or workshop if seating is available. Cancellation notices will be emailed to participants whose registrations are received by July 20, 2006.
