Adaptive Sampling - Continuing Education - Course
ASA, Section on Survey Research Methods
Instructor(s): Steven K. Thompson, The Pennsylvania State University
Adaptive sampling designs are those in which the procedure for selecting the sample depends on values of variables of interest observed during the survey. One type of example includes environmental surveys in which additional sample sites are added in the vicinity of high species abundance or pollution hot spots. Another type of example comes up in health studies involving hard-to-reach or hidden populations, such as injection drug users and others at high risk for HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C, in which social links are followed from qualifying respondents to find additional members of the hidden population. The first example is adaptive sampling in a spatial setting while the second is adaptive sampling in a network setting. In this short course an introduction to adaptive sampling ideas and methods will be given. Recent developments provide more flexible adaptive sampling methods and these new methods will be covered in this course. The course will be self-contained. Although familiarity with basic statistics is assumed, no specialized knowledge of sampling is assumed. OPTIONAL TEXTBOOK AVAILABLE
