This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Extending the Cox Model - Continuing Education - Course

The Cox model has become the standard for analysis of time-to-event data in clinical trials, so much so that it is often used without any thought as to its appropriateness, nor of what broader analyses might be done in the framework of the model. This course will examine three aspects of the Cox model: checking for model adequacy, use of random effects in the model, and the extension to competing risks. (There is not time to cover all topics in the book). The material for the first part overlaps with that in the book by Therneau and Grambsch, the material on random effects overlaps to some degree but is largely new --- in particular the software has made great strides in the last 2 years, allowing a much wider range of models. The material on competing risks is largely motivated by problems in the allocation of organs and outcome in liver transplant, and is largely not present in the book. The issues of competing risks, however, apply to many studies with long term survival, for which both disease mortality and the base population mortality play a significant role.
