Title: Data Needs for the Intelligent Design of University/Industry Partnerships

Abstract:

Recent state budget declines have stimulated renewed interest in university/industry collaborations---not only for the direct funding they can bring to academic research, but for the nebulous promise of transforming the university into a center of economic growth for the state. While every region of the country wishes to be the next "Silicon Valley" or "Route 128" and every university the next Stanford or MIT, it is clear that this end state is not reached by simply launching an academic center of excellence. This presentation summarizes known trends in papers, patents, startups, licensing, and other data in order to ask the question: Can any of these be correlated with university/industry partnerships as an input, or with productivity and regional economic growth as an output? If not, what data are we missing?
