Abstract:

In June 2002, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) launched a multimedia advertising campaign designed to encourage physical activity and healthy behaviors among 9 to 13 year olds in the United States using the brand and tagline, "VERB. It's What You Do." The primary vehicle for assessing the impact of these efforts is the Youth Media Campaign Longitudinal Survey (YMC). Baseline parent-child interviews were conducted in the spring of 2002 and followup surveys in the next two years. In the YMC, as in most surveys, the responses to some data items were not obtained for all interviews. This paper discusses the application of an innovative new approach to item imputation in the second followup survey of 2004. The method takes advantage of both longitudinal and cross-sectional data, uses hot-deck imputation with modeling to identify nearest neighbors, and respects questionnaire skip patterns. The procedure is implemented through a highly automated SAS macro, given survey specific input parameters.
