Abstract:

Metaanalyses has a long history as a statistical methodology. The application of metaanalysis to the fields of clinical trials and epidemiology is relatively new. We will explore a little of this history and the origins of this idea. Next, we will look at current applications of metaanalysis in the field of medicine and public health, with a focus on successful applications, and discuss its limitations. Is there a role for metaanalyses in the design and analysis of historical control and noninferiority trials? Finally, the discussion will focus on the future for metaanalysis and metaanalysts and ask the question: Should the whole idea be dropped?
