Title: Navigating around a Large Statistical Blindspot: Inferring Clinical Outcomes for Undersampled Populations of Orthodontics Cases from Results Sampled from Different Populations

Abstract:

Align Technology works with several dozen consulting clinicians (orthodontists and general practitioners) to optimize such variables as default practices in treatment planning. This helps drive our fabrication facilities to produce sequences of "aligners" (temporarily worn plastic devices that play a role similar to braces.) In addition, we have tens of thousands of followup case records on hundreds of thousands of patient records. However, despite this wealth of data, we found reason to expect significantly different results for less frequently sampled clinicians in cases without followup records and, notably, in the interaction of these two groups. This talk covers our effort to model within these significant blindspots by first building new predictors for case difficulty and certain clinician preferences and then modeling differences between sampled and undersampled groups. Initial results are being validated by targeted questionnaires. Of notable interest in this context is the value of survival analysis paradigms to modeling clinician treatment experience.
