Abstract:

The Statistical Consulting Center at Penn State University offers consulting services to clients at Penn State as well as to a few external clients. Our three-tiered mission is to provide high-quality statistical input for excellence in research projects, to train our statistics students to effectively interact with investigators from other fields, and to encourage collaboration between statisticians and investigators. It is from these three pillars that we evaluate our efficacy. The easiest dimension to measure is short-term consumer satisfaction, while more abstract dimensions include assessing the value of our services. In 1990 and again in 2005, we administered a survey to our clients to assess the performance and importance of our services and to solicit their suggestions regarding funding for our services. For these studies, we include clients who have visited the center during the previous three years. We compare and contrast this type of self-assessment to the brief feedback forms we ask each client to complete at the conclusion of each consultation.
