Title: Multiple Comparisons of Medians Using Permutation Tests

Abstract:

We investigate power properties of simultaneous pairwise comparison procedures based on permutation tests and median statistics. Previous procedures have investigated performance when permuting freely across all treatments. Hochberg and Tamhance (1987) suggest a valid test must be based on permuting only within pairs of treatments being compared. We investigate the performance of the Nemyani (1963) and Levy (1979) method and a modification of a method due to Miller (1981) (utilizing medians rather than means) under both types of permutation scenarios. Type-I error rate properties also are considered and recommendations on choice of method are outlined.
