Title: Distributional Aspects of P-values and Their Use in MultipleTesting Situations

Abstract:

Distributional properties of a P-value, as a random variable, have found use in multiple testing applications such as those that occur when analyzing data from microarrays. Under the null hypothesis, the distribution of a P-value is uniform on the interval [0,1], providing the correct distribution of the test statistic was used to compute the P-value. When the alternative hypothesis is true, the distribution depends on other factors, such as effect size and sample size. This paper explores distributional properties of a P-value obtained from an incorrect reference distribution and the implications for multiple testing situations. Also considered is the joint distribution of correlated P-values and the effect of correlation on conclusions from multiple tests.
