Abstract:

Epilepsy/seizure disorder (epi/sz) is a chronic condition defined as two or more unprovoked seizures. Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are the primary treatment for epi/sz. This was an epidemiological study of NH elderly using secondary source data from 1999 physicians' medications orders (POs) and Minimum Data Set (MDS) assessments. Two admission groups were studied. one group consisted of all people (N=35,912) aged 65 years and older admitted in 1999 to any of 556 facilities in 31 U.S. states; another group (N=2,122) consisted of only those diagnosed with having epi/sz. GEE models were fit to study race/ethnicity and other demographic and health status factors associated with prevalence of epi/sz and any AED use at admission among those with epi/sz. In conclusion, we found race/ethnicity was associated with both prevalence of epi/sz and AED treatment, but it did not operate independently. Race/ethnicity interacted with stroke and Alzheimer's disease in the association with prevalence of epi/sz and with nonAlzheimer's dementia and a MDS cognition scale in the association with AED use.
