Title: A Model for Corn Pollen Dispersion

Abstract:

During the past decade, there has been an increasing interest in the uses of genetically modified corn in the pharmaceutical industry. However, planting genetically modified crops in the open field raises concerns in terms of possible spread of traits associated with such genetic engineering into corn used for general food production. Currently, EPA requires a buffer zone of 1 mile around the corn field to ensure there is no contamination. Since this regulation seems to be decided more or less based on empirical observations, a number of studies have been conducted aimed at understanding the dispersion of pollen of genetically modified corn crops. From the statistical point of view, this task poses several challenges related to a substantial fall in the magnitude of observations as the distance from the source field increases. We propose here a model that incorporates distance and meteorological variables as covariates in an effort to estimate the probability of contamination far from the field.
