Abstract:

Ecological studies frequently involve work in spatially constrained settings, as well as laborious or expensive data collection. In this paper, we consider sampling plans designed to generate samples representing population abundance while avoiding the selection of units providing essentially redundant information. Further, we investigate whether the use of these plans allows the use of smaller sample sizes while providing adequate estimations. Assuming sampling plots that are physically close might be more similar than distant plots, we employ plans that have the property of avoiding the simultaneous selection of units that are, in some sense, neighbors. The efficiencies of these sampling plans, as well as that of simple random sampling, are compared using the insect population datasets collected at Bachelor Reserve in Southern Ohio.
