Abstract:

We introduce the concept of "exploiting" a factor effect as a means of assessing the performance of experimental plans. A factor is defined to be "exploited" when an experimental process results in factor settings that improve the response of the system. Given this definition and a mathematical model of a response surface, closed-form expressions are derived for the probability of exploiting main effects and two-factor interactions using resolution III designs and adaptive one-factor-at-a-time experiments. In addition, computational simulations provide estimates of the probability of exploiting factor effects using resolution V designs.
