Abstract:

Since 1995, undergraduate students have participated every summer in Saint Vincent College's Watershed Restoration Institute. Students in physics, chemistry, biology, history, computer science, public policy, and education have documented the impact of pollution from coal mining in the local watershed and remediation efforts begun in 1997 using a constructed system of passive wetlands. Research results from these students have been used to assess the success of remediation, attract grant monies for further studies, and provide an opportunity for students to present their results at local and national conferences. In the summers of 2003 and 2004, teams of five undergraduate students began a comprehensive effort to organize and statistically analyze bioassessment data collected in previous years. This paper describes the data analysis project, selection of the students who participated, design of the summers' tasks, activities of the students, and the statistical analyses produced.
