Title: A Bayesian IRT Model for Comparative Item Performance under Dual Modes of Survey Administration or Educational Assessment

Abstract:

Ordinal scale response items often are used in quantifying a latent trait, such as level of depression or student proficiency. The mode in which these items are administered may affect an item's characteristics, such as the item's location on the latent scale and the efficiency of the item in discriminating between different values of the latent trait. For example, in a survey of depression-related items, a patient may respond differently when the items are administered over the phone versus in a self-administered questionnaire; in an educational assessment, second-language learners may perform differently when the items are presented in their native or second language. We present the Bayesian Differential Mode Effects Model (BDMEM), a Bayesian IRT model for the detection and quantification of administration mode effects at both the item and scale levels. The BDMEM is compared to the popular approach of differential item functioning (DIF) and its advantages over DIF are highlighted, including the automatic equating of the results from the different modes. Examples from both mental health surveys and educational testing are examined.
