Title: Demonstration of Multivariate Analysis Techniques Using Dentistry Application Information and Their National Board Scores

Abstract:

College GPAs and Dental Admission Test (DAT) scores are considered when applying to the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry. Once accepted, students must pass four parts of the National Board Dental Exam I (NBDEI). Basic regression techniques could assess relationships between entrance criteria and board scores. However, they allow one outcome and uncorrelated predictors. The purpose of this project is to showcase multivariate analysis techniques that assess relationships between and among predictor and outcome variables. In the 1990s, 564 OU students took NBDEI. An association between outcome and predictor variables was determined using canonical correlation (Wilks' L p<0.0001). The relationship of variables within outcome and predictor groups was assessed using Pearson's correlation coefficients, principal components (PC), and exploratory factor analysis. The outcomes' min and max pairwise correlation is 0.55 and 0.77. The predictors' min and max pairwise correlation is 0.10 and 0.90. The first PC of outcome variables accounts for 0.76 of total variance, and the first three PCs account for 0.71 of total variance.
