Abstract:

The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) is one of several federal agencies that has developed research data centers. At NCHS, as with other federal research data centers, researchers are granted access to restricted data files needed to complete approved projects. Restricted data files may contain information such as lower levels of geography, but do not contain direct identifiers (e.g., name or social security number). The NCHS Research Data Center (RDC) is unique in that currently it is the only federal research data center that has developed a remote access system that enables approved researchers to get access to restricted data files from their offices or homes, thus eliminating the need to appear onsite at the NCHS RDC. Not surprisingly, strict guidelines and procedures have been established for researchers to use this system. This presentation will describe these guidelines and procedures and provide examples of research projects that have been conducted through the remote access system.
