Abstract:

Biostatistics can be an extremely challenging subject to teach to students whose major area of study is not statistics, partially because instructors are called upon to teach in ways different from the manner in which they learned the material. Predoctoral biostatistics teaching assistants are likely to teach biostatistics to students from other fields formally or informally in their future career settings. Accordingly, training in good teaching practices should be incorporated in graduate school curricula. We conducted a one-day training session for nine biostatistics doctoral students who were expected to serve as teaching assistants for graduate students from other disciplines. As part of this session, we developed an active learning exercise to teach good lecture practices specific to biostatistics, including lecture design, use and explanation of formulas, and integration of connecting words between concepts. The activity was based on a lecture utilizing the binomial equation. We present the components of the training session, the specific activity and its related discussion, feedback from the students, and our conclusions.
