Abstract:

Complete randomization in experiments for agricultural and engineering sciences may not be convenient due to constraints in time and/or cost or presence of hard-to-change factors. In these situations, restrictions on randomization lead to a split-plot design or one of its variants. These experiments contain different types of experimental units, resulting in more than one error term. This structure affects the analysis of such experiments. Extensive literature on the design and analysis of split-plot experiments has appeared lately. However, not many articles tackle the specificities of strip-plot designs. Strip-plot designs, also known as strip-block or split-lot designs, are particularly useful for processes than can be separated into two stages. We present an arrangement with a strip-plot structure, aiming at reduction of experimental costs. We provide theoretical and application properties of this layout, called post-fractionated strip-block design. Specifically, we show how to analyze such experiments when there is no replication. An experiment to improve batteries for hearing-aid devices is discussed to illustrate the application.
