Abstract:

Having accurate information about the health of Canadians is essential to improving health care in Canada. The Canadian Health Measure Survey (CHMS) is a new Statistics Canada survey that combines a general health interview with direct physical measure, including height, weight, blood pressure, fitness test, and urine and blood samples. The information gathered through direct measures of health is essential to evaluate the true extent of the problems associated with such major health concerns as diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. While this is a relatively new survey in Canada, many other countries have uncovered important health findings through the collection of direct physical measures. The CHMS will be conducted sometime in 2006. In order to develop the best possible survey, the CHMS held a pretest in the fall of 2004 in Calgary. The goals of pretest include testing response rates, evaluating current planning assumptions, and determining costs. The presentation will highlight the results of the pretest, give an overview of the main survey, and discuss some of the unique challenges associated with this type of survey.
