This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Title: Choosing a Career as a Statistician in a Liberal Arts College

Life as a liberal arts professor is idealized by many, but often it is not considered a career option for statisticians. This poster presents some perspectives on what it is like to be a statistician at a liberal arts college. Several statisticians who have had careers in business, industry, or government and have now transitioned into academia describe how their careers have changed. Benefits of a liberal arts career include working with small classes of bright, motivated students in an environment that encourages innovation. Many liberal arts colleges promote a sense of a close and interdisciplinary community along with the opportunity for pursuing a flexible and individualistic scholarly agenda. Having a clear sense of vocation in shaping young lives and helping to fill the pipeline with enthusiastic and talented students make being a liberal arts statistician particularly satisfying. Graduate school faculty also will find useful information for advising their students about career choices, including lists of potential college speakers, email, and other networks through which to find liberal arts positions and primary expectations of these colleges.
