Title: Applying Pareto's Law to Statistics: A General Investigation

Abstract:

Vilfredo Pareto, an Italian economist, observed 80% of the land in Italy was owned by 20% of the people. He later found the 80/20 ratio could be applied to a variety of entities and developed what is currently known as Pareto's Law or principle. This poster investigates whether Pareto's Law can be applied to statistical inference. More precisely, do 20% of the observations account for 80% of the variability between datasets with significant differences? Random datasets of varying sample sizes were created using SAS and SPSS. The t-test was selected as the instrument of observation because of its parsimonious structure. The datasets were grouped in pairs according to equal sample size and t-tests were implemented to check for significant differences between the group means. Only t-tests that produced significant results were observed (alpha less than .05). A grand mean of each dataset pair was computed, and observations of about one and half standard deviations away from the mean were considered as the influential 20%.
