Abstract:

An area of research that has received much attention is the evaluation of faculty in clinical teaching. These evaluations are used to make critical decisions regarding faculty promotion and improving the quality of instruction. This data often is collected in the form of questionnaires, with individual item quantification using Likert scales. It is typically analyzed as an ordered categorical variable at the item-level or as a continuous variable using some scoring mechanism to combine the items. Some of the statistical methods commonly used to analyze such data include kappa, Kendall's tau, intra-class correlation, and Cronbach's alpha. Analysis also can be done using more complex methods such as discriminant analysis or principal component analysis. The goal of this presentation is to discuss examples from projects on the assessment of clinical teaching and review the appropriateness of statistical methods used in representative scenarios.
