Typically, in fMRI studies, the investigator is interested in identifying voxels or regions of voxels associated with or activated by a cognitive task. However, a further objective may be to investigate whether the size of the activation region (number of voxels identified as active) is changing within a subject under different conditions. Therefore, it is important to know how well various methods for detecting activation can accurately identify the region(s) of activation (ROA). We present a simulation study of different techniques for detecting activation using ROA's of different shapes and sizes and assess their performance in each case using several measures of accuracy. Methods considered include standard multiple comparison procedures, cluster inference, and independent or spatial mixture models. We also investigate the effect of smoothing on accurately identifying the ROA.
