Abstract:

A multiple regression--based technique for identifying criterion-related patterns in psychological assessment is illustrated via MMPI-2 clinical scales. This technique identifies predictor score patterns associated with high scores on a criterion variable. Criterion-related patterns on MMPI-2 clinical scales associated with three psychopathologic categories (neurotic, psychotic, and character disorder) were identified for 1,962 male and 2,666 female inpatients. Diagnostic classification based on the criterion-related patterns respectively identified 79.4% (92.1%), 59.8% (55.6%), and 82.9% (72.6%) classified as neurotic, psychotic, and character disorder for male (female) inpatients. Overall rates were approximately 70% for both samples, validating their potential usefulness in clinical diagnosis. Crossvalidation reproduced the criterion-related patterns and confirmed their predictive validity and diagnostic utility across samples. I will discuss advantages and methodological features of applying the proposed technique for clinical settings.
