Title: Finding a Pattern of High School Coursework Predictive of High Achievement

Abstract:

This presentation will describe how multiple regression can be used to identify a pattern of high school coursework such that students whose coursework resembles the pattern tend to have higher achievement at the end of high school. This pattern is called the criterion-pattern. Once the criterion-pattern is identified, a profile match statistic can be computed for each student. The match statistic (a covariance) quantifies the degree of match between the student's coursework and the criterion coursework pattern. In the High School and Beyond dataset used as an illustration, the profile match variable accounted for more than 50% of the variation in end-of-high school achievement test scores. This presentation will describe and illustrate the regression procedure for identifying the pattern, method of computing the profile match statistic for each student, and procedure for estimating the variance accounted for by the profile match statistic.
