Abstract:

The contemporary practice of medicine places patients, families, and health care providers in complex moral and decisionmaking situations. In this context, ethics consultation has flourished. Much theoretical work has been done regarding the nature, goals, procedures, and competencies required for an ethics consultant, but few studies have collected data to characterize the individuals actually performing ethics consultations. To this end, an internet survey was conducted on a sample (n=100) of members of the Association for Professional and Practical Ethics. This study details the characteristics, activities, collaboration, and attitudes of those involved in clinical ethics consultation.
