Abstract:

At Brigham Young University, we have been conducting an ongoing study to improve teaching in our introductory statistics course. We spent several years examining the effect of multimedia in the classroom. As an outcome of this study, we developed lessons and applets using Flash Macromedia. Included in the lessons are animations intended to clarify difficult concepts such as standard deviation. We have now moved these lessons into a computer-based learning environment. In this panel, we will present examples of the materials of our computer-based course and what we have learned. Howard B. Christensen will outline the history of our study. Dennis L. Eggett will demonstrate the materials. Patti B. Collings will discuss how we currently are using the materials in a self-study mode, and Paul J. Fields will report on several interesting insights obtained from analysis of the data.
