There are a multitude of methods available to evaluate academic progress of students, such as homework, quizzes, exams, reports, projects, article review, and others. How can these be tailored to medical students, residents, fellows, and other physicians-in-training? What works? What doesn't work? How do we know if a particular method of evaluation works? What exactly should be measured, and how do we measure it? How many forms of assessments should be made? How do we balance the various formats and frequency of assessment with our workload and other responsibilities? This should be a lively discussion where we share our experiences with others who teach in the health sciences. We may not have all the answers, but hopefully we'll gain some insight and acquire some tips about assessment.
