Abstract:

Injuries are a serious public health issue, and policymakers need data on their frequency and economic costs to help design and target appropriate intervention strategies. Several national surveys and data systems have been used to produce a variety of estimates on the frequency and impact of medically treated injuries, including the National Health Care Survey, National Health Interview Survey, and national vital statistics system. In addition, the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) can be used to produce annual estimates of the number of persons with injury-related conditions and health care expenses and payment sources associated with those conditions, which are different estimates than available from other data sources. This paper uses 2002 data to update and expand on a previous AHRQ report that used MEPS data to examine health care expenses for injuries across a variety of population subgroups in 1997. Methodological and statistical considerations of using MEPS to produce injury-related estimates and limitations of the survey for that purpose are described. References and comparisons to other survey estimates also are discussed where appropriate.
