Abstract:
|
The American Statistical Association (ASA) funded the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) Project, which consists of two groups: one focused on K-12 education and one focused on introductory college courses. This panel addresses implementing the recommendations developed by the college group. The six recommendations described in the report are: emphasize statistical literacy and develop statistical thinking; use real data; stress conceptual understanding rather than mere knowledge of procedures; foster active learning; use technology to develop conceptual understanding and analyze data; and use assessments to improve and evaluate learning. Members of the panel have been involved in various aspects of developing or implementing the GAISE recommendations They will discuss their experiences designing, teaching, and evaluating introductory statistics courses both in a regular class format and in an online format aligned with GAISE. Special attention will be paid to role of assessment in an introductory course in light of evaluating students' attainment of statistics literacy and thinking.
