Abstract:

Studying the distribution of professionals working in mental health (MH) and substance abuse (SA) fields in relation to service needs informs decisionmaking in public health workforce development. We use various data sources to examine the professional workforce distribution by state. The workforce data are: The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' estimates on psychiatrists, psychiatric technicians, psychiatrists' aides, MH&SA social workers, SA and behavioral disorder counselors, and MH counselors; and a number of national organizations' MH/SA certification databases. Data on service needs are: National Survey of Drug Use and Health estimates of persons who need services, Treatment Episode Data Set's admission numbers, and census population estimates of population of age 18-25. We create a set of indicators of professional workforce distribution by state, including the total and subgroup professional numbers per risk population, needy population, and treatment admissions. We create maps to visualize the indicators by state. Comparing data and maps, we identify cross-state differences in overall and subgroups of MH/SA professional workforce shortage.
