Abstract:

If post-DDS graduate trainees are to become discriminating readers of the dental literature, it is imperative they receive exposure to statistical methodology beyond those topics routinely addressed in a biostatistics introductory course. This is a fairly diverse group of students, drawn from multiple graduate dental specialty programs; they typically have minimal exposure to statistics upon entry into their graduate programs. Approaches to providing this needed exposure are discussed, using survival analysis as an illustration. The first of these involves introduction of advanced topics into the introductory biostatistics course using a conceptual approach. Another integrates statistical content into formal course offerings emphasizing evidence-based dentistry and dental public health. Others include establishment of a statistical presence in specialty-specific courses and seminar series associated with particular training programs. In particular, the important role of both faculty-directed and student-led literature review is emphasized.
