Abstract:

Community-based projects are an excellent venue for active learning, but obstacles must be overcome, especially when part of a "regular" class. In particular, can nonmajor introductory and intermediate statistics classes use these projects while still achieving the traditional outcomes for such classes? And, can the outcomes of these projects be of sufficient quality to benefit the community? When the pieces fit together, students have found these projects to be motivating, interesting, memorable, and fulfilling. They appeared to gain a better understanding of course material. This panel brings together those who have managed to do such teaching with undergraduates (in quite different ways), and we hope to share our ideas and talk about ways to overcome the many obstacles we have encountered.
