Abstract:

The use of internet samples has grown rapidly and is now widely accepted for a variety of applications. Government agencies, academic institutions, advertising agencies, consumer goods manufacturers, and media companies all embrace web research because of its speed, flexibility, video capability, and, frequently, its economical pricing. According to the January 2003 issue of Inside Research, overall spending for online research increased by 53% between 2000 and 2001 and by another 61% in 2002, a level of growth that is expected to continue for several more years. But what about the quality of the data? As use of the internet for public and commercial research grows, so too does the need for a deeper understanding of the medium's unique methodological challenges. Discussion will focus on research conducted and documented to date about data quality in web-based surveys and what future research is needed to help fill in the gaps.
