Title: Investigation of Random Effects Models for Time-varying Variables with Missing Values in the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey

Abstract:

The Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), a national probability sample survey sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), is designed to provide nationally representative estimates of health care use, expenditures, sources of payment, and insurance coverage for the U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized population. MEPS is a complex survey with a panel design. There is interest in using the longitudinal aspect of MEPS to estimate time trends, but there are difficulties in incorporating the complex design with typical multilevel or hierarchical models used in this type of longitudinal analysis, especially in the presence of drop-out missingness. The current work investigates the use of random effects models in this situation to model a health status variable over five panels with recurring respondents and account for the dependencies of both repeated measures and dependent selection.
